They weren't meant to be interrupters, but who cares about class design now, right?
Class design cannot be an argument, not anymore. The 'they were supposed to......' was thrown out of the window long ago.

Assassins, the squishy quick-killers, are tanking high end areas with Perma SF. Who would have guessed this early Factions era?

Elementalists, supposed to "obliterate enemies" (quoted from in game description) with elements, are mostly running support roles because their damage is kind of pathetic in Hard Mode.

Warriors, the 'build adrenaline' concept class, spams Energy-based skills with Warriors Endurance.

Rangers and Mesmers hardly bother to run Interrupt builds in Hard Mode PvE due to faster activation times of monsters, and try to bring damage or something else, yet by design both professions were supposed to be helping the team with interrupts, given the many interruption skills given to them.

Just some examples that kind of show that not all classes play their primary roles in PvE anymore, simply because it's not optimal or there's something better.

Thus, saying Mesmers can't deal AoE damage because they weren't supposed to, doesn't seem like and argument that stands. I would agree with you, but not now: with so many inconsistencies around the other classes, Mesmers are fine.

Cry of Pain is strong, but fine. If anything, make its damage tied to Fast Casting so only Mesmers can use it well. I think the suggestions to kill possibly the last viable HM caster team option makes the game pretty boring, I certainly don't want to be forced to run boring 'balanced physical'...

Physical classes already have their share of damage-dealing. Buffed enough, they are the best damage. Why take out casters' last option out? There are people in this game who don't like to melee, and don't like to be melee-buff-biatches. They like to kill, with spells, and of course it is fun.

If CoP were to be nerfed, then I'd love to see some buff to Ele and other casters damage, somehow, but it seems highly unlikely either would happen.

Meh I find it hard, mesmers with CoP are overpowered, but some hard mode ele bosses are too. When there's bosses that can wipe out half of your party in one blow some imba pve skills all of a sudden come in pretty handy.

What strikes me is that some people here post stories about 'getting into groups', I mean, do people still pug? to me many areas in the game are **** dead as a rock, I rarely see teams forming to do whatever.

I would change that to "casters with CoP are overpowered,.." Is a primary mesmer with CoP obviously more overpowered than a secondary mesmer with CoP?

One advantage of being a mesmer with CoP is to ability to go Me/A and use Assassin's Promise. But there are also A/Me in the game that use that AP+CoP combo successfully too.

If you are thinking of just H/H, then CoP isn't really overpowered when you compare with the necros using AP+PvE skills. My AP necro still kills faster than my CoP mesmer considering that there is no need to cast energy management skills or a mesmer hex to feed CoP. Compared to the necros and the other professions, a CoP mesmer isn't really more overpowered in a H/H team.

Cryway is overpowered, but as long as you have the ability to bring up to a max of 24 overpowered PvE skills in a team, it is inevitable to come up with an overpowered team build.

I mentioned this before , limit the amount of identical pve skills a team can have to 3. GG cryway and mesmers primaries that h\h can still enjoy CoP. And as others have said one CoP mesmer is hardly overpowered.

Lol how? The PvE skills randomly disappear on some bars when the group enters the area?
Just won't work (and is a bad idea in general).
CoP is hardly overpowered with the high cooldown it has.

I like Cry of Pain and don't think the skill by itself is overpowered when h/hing due to the recharge time (you get a better dps by just spamming necrosis). FoC, RoJ and E Surge all already do similar armour ignoring AoE damage but with the obvious drawbacks of attribute investment.

One thing I'm not comfortable with is every caster and their dog using CoP - namely abusing the energy pools of necros and eles to feed echo chains. I think linking this skill to fast casting is a good way to reinforce this skills original fuction (making mesmers more viable in pve teams) and puts it more in line with other armour ignoring AoE damage and other pve only skills (like TNTF).

Another way it could be changed is to make it not a spell, so that it can no longer be echo chained, this may call a need for alturnative damage sources to support the spike.

Oh, I agree that Assassins Promise + CoP is broken, but AP + most PvE skills is also pretty broken - that's an issue with AP, not CoP.

[Cry of Pain] is fine as far as pve skills go, definitely not as OP as [lightbringers gaze] is just has more mobility where as you can go anywhere not just realm of torment. My mesmer played all the campaigns and all elite areas without pve skills which I enjoyed but I'm looking forward to getting in on some of this cryer action and I finally got a maxed [Ether Nightmare] so sign me up!

[[Cry of [email protected]] can easily be maxed, which I find is the biggest problem. If it had Luxon/Kurz title track, that would be a lol! Enjoy [[ether [email protected]] nightfall.

I use it sometimes. Mainly for kicks though; "oh look! I can act like an ele & send lots of numbers up!"

To be honest though, I much prefer Wandering Eye & Clumsiness to CoP. I'm not entirely sure why, maybe because those skills int, just as messies should.

Still, health degen is just the way I play my mes though. I tend to classify CoP in my mental Domi category-aka direct damage when a mes wants to be an ele.

I really enjoye using CoP. yeah I feel a bit dirty and cheap when i use it, but hell its only pve. CoP kinda shed a new light on mes and their role in Pve. usually you coulnd't find a mes in any high-end area [UW, Fow, DoA] now with the introduction of CoP their swarming these areas.

Hey my mesmer likes gemstones to
